According to TEAMtalk, German side RB Leipzig are looking to sign Wigan midfielder Nick Powell ahead of Celtic, but it is the Hoops’ fierce rivals Rangers who should be looking to hijack any deal and sign the 24-year-old.
What’s the situation?
The TEAMtalk report states that Celtic were leading the race to sign Powell ahead of Premier League duo Brighton and Burnley, but Leipzig are now looking to pounce and sign the former Manchester United midfielder on a pre-contract agreement in January with the view to him joining in the summer.
This deal will be available to all sides outside of England is Powell does not extend his current contract that is set to end at the DW Stadium after the conclusion of this season and there is sure to be a long list of suitors.
Powell, who can play in central midfield or up front, has netted four goals and provided five assists in 15 games for Wigan so far during this campaign and Rangers boss Steven Gerrard should go all out to secure his signature ahead of Celtic and Leipzig.
The next level
Gerrard currently has the Gers sat in third in the Scottish Premiership after their 7-1 thumping of Motherwell on the weekend, but he has recently spoken of the need to inject some more quality into his squad.
Powell would certainly provide that creativity that Rangers sometimes lack and him joining could take the Glasgow side to the next level, proving to be a long-term replacement and upgrade on Scott Arfield in the middle of the park.
With it looking increasingly likely that Powell will be available on a free transfer come next summer, Rangers and Gerrard would be pulling off a huge coup and making a statement of intent if they are able to secure his services.
So, Rangers fans, would you like to see the club move for Powell on a pre-contract agreement in January? Have your say by voting in the poll below.
