Southampton striker Rickie Lambert will become Stoke City boss Tony Pulis’ main transfer target when the window opens in January.
According to The Sun, Pulis has been tipped off that the Saints might want to cash in on their prized striker, with the Stoke manager keen to send Kenwyne Jones in the other direction as part of the deal.
The 30-year-old was prolific in the lower tiers of English football but has now continued that form in the Premier League, playing in the top flight for the first time in his career. From his eight appearances this season, Lambert has already netted four times including a goal in the dramatic 3-2 defeat against Manchester City in the opening game of the season.
Lambert joined Southampton in 2009 after moving from Bristol Rovers and has scored over 80 goals for the south coast club in just over three seasons.
The former Pirates striker has proved to be a fan favourite at St Mary’s and his form last season helped him to secure a place in the Championship Team of the Year.
Lambert has also now joined an elite group of players who have scored in all four leagues in English football.
Stoke are eager to add striking options to their ranks to help out the likes of Jonathan Walters, Michael Owen and Peter Crouch, and Lambert is fast becoming the Potters’ top target.
Pulis has played down rumours that Kenwyne Jones is set to depart the Britannia Stadium, but it is thought the wantaway striker could be used as part of a deal to bring Lambert to Stoke.
